Team Coaching in High Reliability Organizations
High Reliability Organizations are those that "seek to sustain error-free performance, despite operating in complex and hazardous conditions, where the consequences of a mistake could be catastrophic" (Whitmore, 2017). Such industries that require high reliability organizations include: energy (oil and gas, nuclear), airlines, hospital emergency departments and many more.
Commonly, redundancy, processes and training are used to ensure high reliability. Coaching is becoming more common as a way to get the best out of people. Therefore, can it have an impact in these types of organizations?
With Warwick Business School, I have been looking at team coaching within the oil and gas sector, with the aim of:
1. Identifying where team coaching is being used today and how effective it has been
2. Identify any challenges or desires where the industry believe team coaching can help
3. Look at how can the industry more widely adopt and implement effective team coaching
The research is now complete. Thank you to all those that contributed. It has revealed some interesting insights. Please find below a link to the abstract. The full thesis, will be available later this year. If you would like a copy, please provide your name and email in the form below.
As part of the research, a new model for team coaching specific to Operations Teams has been developed. We are keen to trial this method. If your organization is interested, please get in touch.
Further talks, papers and events regarding this topic are planned for 2022. Please watch this space for more details.
